Air Quality Response Plan and Communication Playbook
The Full Story
Context: Due to increasing wildfire smoke risks driven by climate variability, we must ensure the safety of athletes and volunteers exposed for extended periods. Our decision-making is guided by Health Canada’s Air Quality Health Index (AQHI), Alberta’s environmental monitoring data, and best practices from other endurance events.
As an Alberta-based organization, we are not legally obligated to cancel the event due to poor air quality. However, we choose to be guided by the principles outlined in relevant legislation and best practices. These include:

1) The Occupiers’ Liability Act (Alberta), which encourages maintaining reasonably safe environments for those on the premises.
2) The Occupational Health and Safety Act (Alberta), which outlines the importance of identifying health hazards and implementing controls to protect volunteers and workers.
3) The broader duty of care principles found in Canadian case law, which support taking reasonable steps to avoid foreseeable harm. These frameworks inform our approach and reinforce our commitment to athlete and volunteer well-being during the event.
